Groundbreaking signals start of corporate office construction

A groundbreaking ceremony for the long-awaited corporate building was held on Friday, June 26. Shovels and bulldozers were on hand to help Chairman and CEO David Banks, Executive Vice President of Asset Management Bobby Stephens, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Fort Smith Mayor Ray Baker and others move the dirt.

Governor Huckabee commended Beverly for its commitment to Fort Smith and the state of Arkansas. He said, "Over 81 percent of the jobs created in Arkansas come from existing industries. From people who already do business here. Folks who understand that this is a great place to live and a great place to do business."

Bobby recognized the work of Fort Smith leaders a decade ago to bring the corporate office to Fort Smith. David Banks acknowledged the difference being in Fort Smith has made in the company's operating ability and in Beverly's ability to attract associates. He stated, "This new structure demonstrates our commitment to Fort Smith."

The building had originally been planned for downtown Fort Smith. Legal challenges, delays, cost increases and space limitations were the principle reasons for changing locations. Completion is scheduled for October, 1999. Situated on a 64-acre tract on the south side of Fort Smith, the building will contain 1,200 people within a 318,000- square-foot facility. Five stories tall, it will also have over 300 miles of voice and data cable when completed. Other features of the building will include:

  • a dining center with indoor and outdoor seating
